The EQLZ 247 is an extremely surprising first performance basketball model from a relatively new brand established in 2018. This shoe was designed by the legendary former Nike designer Aaron Cooper along with Brett Goliff and other sneaker design talent. The EQLZ 247 showcases a blend of familiar and innovative elements, offering a unique performance experience on court.

It’s becoming increasingly rare nowadays to find basketball shoes that actually excel in each of the 5 performance features we analyze here at WearTesters. If you’re lucky, you get 2 or 3 standout features and, as we say here in Spain, “da gracias” ( you better be thankful). The EQLZ 247 is one of those basketball shoes that checks all the boxes. Let’s jump in to the review and see why:

UPDATE: The EQLZ 247 made it onto our list of the best basketball shoes overall and our list of the best-tractioned basketball shoes.

EQLZ 247 Performance Review

EQLZ 247 Traction

EQLZ 247 Traction

The traction on the EQLZ 247 is among its most impressive features. The outsole design is, well, awesome. First off, the configuration is reminiscent of anatomical designs seen in models like the Kobe 9 and Air Jordan 11. On the other hand, shark scales inspire the traction pattern. These individual nubs or columns move independently and provide exceptional grip on court.

The traction is particularly noticeable during lateral movements and quick stops where the nubs catch and bite the floor, offering a smooth and controlled stop without being too abrupt. This setup is elite on indoor courts, though it might wear down quickly on outdoor surfaces. The traction pattern also handles dust well, reducing the need for frequent wiping.

EQLZ 247 Cushioning

EQLZ 247 Cushioning

Cushioning in the EQLZ 247 was surprisingly smooth and responsive, especially since this is the first performance basketball shoe of a lesser-known brand. The midsole features a firm EVA carrier which houses a supercritical Pebax, providing a balanced combination of impact protection and court feel. The cushioning system delivers a fluid and comfortable ride on court.

Additionally, the shoe includes a super critical foam insole, adding another layer of comfort and shock absorption. This is one of the most comfortable and well balanced cushioning systems Chris has experienced in quite some time, which again, considering this is such a young brand, is mind-bending.

EQLZ 247 Materials

EQLZ 247 Materials

The EQLZ 247 again impresses thanks to its high-quality materials and the ability to blend modern and traditional design features. The upper features a combination of premium leather and knit fabric. The leather used is of excellent quality, offers a luxurious feel in hand, and enhances the support of the shoe.

The knit sections are strategically placed for breathability and flexibility, ensuring that the shoe adapts well to foot movements. The combination of these materials not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the 247 but also contributes to the shoe’s durability and comfort. The craftsmanship involved in integrating leather with knit is commendable, and it provides a seamless and supportive fit. One thing to keep in mind is that the knit on the tongue area of the shoe is thin, so lace pressure may be an issue. To avoid this, simply loosen the laces slightly and you should have zero issues.

Materials are normally the biggest weak point in modern hoop shoes. The EQLZ 247 just might have the best material build of any basketball shoe currently on the market.

EQLZ 247 Support

EQLZ 247 Support

Support in the EQLZ 247 is meticulously designed to enhance stability while playing. The support features in the 247 flow perfectly with the overall design. Your foot sits within the midsole which cradles the foot, providing a secure and locked-in feel. This design feature minimizes the risk of sliding inside the shoe, ensuring that the foot remains stable during lateral movements and quick changes of direction.

TPU side panels on both the medial and lateral sides add to the support and offer some torsional rigidity, without compromising flexibility (more effective than the similar principles employed in the Tatum 2). This intricate integration of support features makes the 247 feel super secure, supportive, and fluid while playing.

The one slight issue with the support is a small spot on the lateral side of the forefoot of the shoe (see the video review for exact details). On some movements, the traction is so effective that Chris felt the midsole being sucked underfoot, but it was a minor issue for him.

EQLZ 247 Fit

EQLZ 247 Fit

Finding the right fit with the EQLZ 247 required some trial and error for Chris. While the shoe generally fits true to size, if you want a snug 1 to 1 performance fit, going down half a size will be your best option. Also, have no fear, the knit upper provides a stretchy and adaptable fit, making it easy to put on and take off, which can be an issue with this type of build.

EQLZ 247 Overall

EQLZ 247 Overall

The EQLZ 247 is an excellent, well-rounded, high-performing basketball shoe, which is made all the more impressive since this shoe is coming to us from a practically unknown brand. The EQLZ 247’s innovative traction system, comfortable and responsive cushioning, high-quality materials, and well-designed support features collectively contribute to its impressive on-court performance.

While there might be minor adjustments needed in terms of fit, the overall package delivered by the EQLZ 247 is exceptional. For $150, you’re getting great value for its performance and quality, making it a solid choice for serious basketball players looking for a unique and beastly on-court performance model.
