In the latest episode of Stephen Curry’s YouTube show 5 Minutes From Home, Curry met with three members of Oakland’s McClymonds High School basketball team. During a ride through the city, the players shared stories of hope, loss, determination, and basketball.
Sacrifice comes with #ballislife, and no one knows that better than Oakland natives Darion, Ramon, and Sideek. All three young hoopers have worked through devastating losses and spent hours honing their skills to make basketball their lives.
As the squad rides around the city, they discuss what it’s like being on a team where everyone wants to play one-on-one — it’s difficult to win, as their record last year showed. This year, the team worked together to get many more Ws, and Curry shared that his experience on the Warriors was similar.
“That’s the biggest thing we’ve learned,” Curry told the young athletes. “Everyone can’t be the star, but when you really embrace those roles to help you win games everybody is going to feel good, everybody is going to shine.”
This episode is a deep, thoughtful look at what young men in Oakland must deal with to succeed. I think Curry learned as much from these hoopers as they did from him so check out the episode below and share your thoughts in the comments.
