The Nike Hyperdunk 2008 Lux Deconstructed

The original Nike Hyperdunk from 2008 recently saw it’s first Retro release. China’s FastPass took the shoe apart and now you get to see them deconstructed.

I must say, I’m a little surprised at what we see. The Lunar Foam — the new formula is called Lunarlon nowadays — is really thin. So if you thought the original bottomed out quickly then expect these to go even faster. Although, it wasn’t specified if Nike was able to use the Lunar Foam in the Retro as that formula was developed by NASA (whereas Lunarlon is a mixture of Lunar Foam and Phylon), it’s a bit more durable that way.

Then there is the missing heel cushion. I can’t remember exactly, but I could’ve sworn these featured Lunar Foam in the forefoot and Zoom Air in the heel, just like the Kobe 4 and the Hyperize that followed. In this Retro version it’s just cored out foam in the heel which is no better than what ANTA uses on the KT1.

Check out the images for yourself and let us know what you think about the Nike Hyperdunk 2008 Retro being deconstructed.

  1. Wow Nike. This is a straight middle finger to the people that took a chance on your new innovative product and loved it. To up charge for outdated materials/technology AND cut the tech down is quite frankly unbelievable. Why should anyone be loyal to a brand that pulls this type of crap?

    1. I’m AMAZED that ANYONE is loyal to Nike. It’s exactly like Apple, or any company with a hardcore following — people just want to feel like they’re part of a group that messes with the same stuff they mess with.

      1. The comedy in dealing with Niketards is that they know nothing outside of the swoosh, feeling as if they are not wearing something Nike, that their lives are worthless. That glue that Nike uses is something powerful it seems. I kind of like the fact that Nike is doing this, there is no defense left for them as many of these top tier shoes are starting to show up in places like Marshalls for 49.99.

        1. You can legit get crazy shoes at Marshalls for $50 or $60. I just picked up the Nike Free Run 5.0 2015 for $50 and the Zoom HyperCross Trainer 2 for $60. I also saw a bunch of Hyperdunk 2014s, Air Max Finger Trap Trainers, Nike Zoom Field General 2s, A pair of Lebron 11s, New Balance 530s in an all 3M color way. And these were all $50 or $60 bucks. Like if you’re a size 9 – 14, you should definitely go to your local Marshalls every few weeks, cus they have some crazy stuff sometimes for cheap

      2. I love my Apple stuff and I agree. Some people just take things to the extreme. That goes for anything I guess. I just go with what I like and what I like in shoes right now is what feels/looks great whether it’s Brandblack, Adidas, Li-Ning, Nike, etc.

  2. The OG’s came with heel zoom for sure, as well as cf shank plates, when I first saw these I didn’t even recognize them as Hyperdunks

  3. I don’t think the 2008’s had zoom air,
I still have a pair of the eggplants so I can check but I am almost positive they didn’t
I know the lows did not for sure.

Pretty bummed about the retro- looks like a step back from what is my favorite hoops shoe ever

  4. Pretty sure it was forefoot lunar and heel zoom too… Nike is getting cheaper and cheaper cutting these corners. It’s terrible.

  5. Never bought a Nike retro, and I never will. More money, yet less tech and shoddy materials. What a deal.

  6. Adidas people, just go with Adidas. Unless you know for sure what you’re paying for but other than that just go with Adidas.

  7. I try to give benefit of the doubt to Nike, in thinking they’d turn around a bit with the KD9’s value…but what?

Isn’t this rehash more expensive than the original? Lmao what’s wrong with these people.

  8. Yes they do have a heel zoom unit. I have an original pair still in decent condition. I was hoping to cop a pair or two for ball, but I guess not anymore. I may try to cop the United We Rise colorway for casual wear.

  9. Probably a matter of time before Nike finds some way to sue or bully sites like this to stop. Hilarious.

If you knew the original 08’s, no matter how much you liked them or not, you know how short their lifespan was. This was a shoe that defined a new trend: make shoes feel amazing from a try-on so people snatch them up, but don’t worry about making them durable.

I detested the first generation and I wouldn’t pay a penny for these. I think someone called them Hyperjunks way back then and that’s appropriate. Charging something like $150 for these right? Hahaha. I picked up some KD8’s on clearance from the outlet for $50 and THOSE are barely worth it. The best zoom shoes in my opinion were from that generation of Turbines, 2K3’s and Ultraflights. Zoom based shoes today are a shadow of what they once were.

Please don’t buy all of those “lower profile, weight saving” lines they throw out there. What they mean behind closed-doors is “cost cutting, profit increasing”.

    1. I think lunarlon is garbage. It feels great when you first play in them, but bottoms out in a few weeks(hell, I had some runners that bottomed out in one week). Its fine if you’re in the NBA and get a new pair every game, but for the general public that just doesn’t cut it, especially with boost and bounce out there.

  10. Thanks to guys like Fastpass that deconstruct shoes, we see things that are normally hidden,

Shame, shame on you Nike…..booooo, two thumbs down!!

Thanks to Weartesters we get information like this, which is a goldmine of information.

  11. it could just be that this is the EXT and non sportswear version of the Hyperdunk retro, Nike is cheap and all but I would be surprised if the pairs come out that are actually meant for ball would lack in cushion
