Footjoy Tour Alpha Triple BOA Performance Review

FootJoy Tour Alpha Triple BOA

FootJoy has dominated golf footwear for over 100 years. A few of the most notable golfers repping FootJoy shoes are Justin Thomas, Max Homa, and most recently Tiger Woods. Tiger said he needed shoes with more stability, and FJ was his choice. After testing the FootJoy Tour Alpha Triple BOA, I now understand why Tiger made the jump to FootJoy.

Let’s dive into it.

Footjoy Tour Alpha Triple BOA

Price: $260

Sizing: True to size

Fit

The FootJoy Tour Alpha Triple BOA fits true to size. The perk of having 3 BOA dials integrated in one BOA fit system is the ability to shape the shoe to your foot more than you normally get with other golf shoes. There are two BOA dials on the side, and one on the heel. The integration of the BOA system on the heel especially helps with heel slippage.

After one round, the FootJoy Tour Alpha Triple BOA felt almost completely broken in. If you like your shoes a little bit more loose, you can do that. If you prefer a super tight fit, that’s possible too.

The only downside in the fit category for me was some slight heel achiness after use. FootJoy is clear in stating that the heel is a bit more narrow on this FJ model, which I think led to some additional aching and tightness. It wasn’t enough to keep me from speaking highly of these shoes, but it should be noted for those with wider heels.

FootJoy Tour Alpha Triple BOA outsole traction spikes

Traction

We get nine spikes on the bottom of the FootJoy Tour Alpha Triple BOA.

The traction was top notch. Every tee shot felt more controlled than usual. The spike on the toe helped me especially because I dig my toes into the ground before I tee off.

If you find yourself losing your balance and struggling to shift your weight through your swing, the FootJoy Tour Alpha Triple BOA will provide a nice base to improve that weakness in your game. The traction is the best part about this shoe.

FootJoy Tour Alpha Triple BOA cushion

Cushion

The FootJoy Tour Alpha Triple BOA features an Ortholite EcoPlush Fit-Bed built into the shoe for emphasis on underfoot comfort.

The biggest upside to the Ortholite EcoPlush Fit-Bed is the durability. The cushion and comfort felt virtually the same after 10 rounds in the FootJoy Tour Alpha Triple BOA. According to FootJoy, “the cushioning will remain the same for the life of the shoe.” That’s a bold claim but so far, so good. It’s leading me to believe that statement might be true.

For our walking readers, your feet will feel just fine after 18 holes. The Ortholite EcoPlush Fit-Bed provides enough cushion to keep your feet fresh and ready to go for the next round.

At this point we know that some shoe manufacturers throw in these additional brand names to boost sales and marketing, but Ortholite has a good reputation and this proves to be true with the FootJoy Tour Alpha Triple BOA. The Ortholite EcoPlush Fit-Bed made a difference in comfort.

Support

The support category is another win for the FootJoy Tour Alpha Triple BOA.

The Proprietary OPS system does a great job at allowing you to swing as hard as you want. According to FootJoy, the OPS system locks you in so you can swing away. Once you’ve set your stance and dug your spikes into the grass, you’re ready to go. My typical swing speed with my driver is around 105 mph and I felt this technology go to work for me.

The traction and support go hand in hand with the FootJoy Tour Alpha Triple BOA. They complimented each other which led to zero slippage and harder swings.

Price

At roughly $260, it’s on the high end for price. I’ve said this with previous shoes and it applies here as well. Unless you’re a single digit handicap or swing faster than the average player, don’t break the bank for these shoes.

The FootJoy Tour Alpha Triple BOA is an animal of a golf shoe. It performed well in every single category.

I’m not trying to gate-keep the FootJoy Tour Alpha Triple BOA because the shoe is REALLY that good, but the newer golfer is better off spending money on tee times, new clubs, and instruction to improve their game.

Bonus

The FootJoy Tour Alpha Triple BOA is fully waterproof. This is a major bonus if you play in climates with consistent rain. FJ also states that there is a 2 year warranty for US buyers.

BOA and FootJoy first teamed up in 2006. We are now two years shy of the 20th anniversary of FootJoy x BOA.

Here is a fun list of players wearing a shoe containing BOA technology.

THE WRAP on the FOOTJOY TOUR ALPHA TRIPLE BOA

The FootJoy Tour Alpha Triple BOA is a top tier find.

This was my first time wearing a golf shoe with a BOA Fit System, and I’m a fan. Previously, I had only used BOA on snowboard boots. I’m pleased to say that I’m now an advocate for golf shoes with BOA integrations.

The icing on the cake with the FootJoy Tour Alpha Triple BOA was the third BOA dial. Most golf shoes only have one or two BOA dials so having a third on the heel was fun to test.

The 3rd BOA dial on the heel helped add stability and improved the heel fit which added the capability to completely eliminate heel slippage.

The additional spikes on the bottom created A+ traction which became my favorite part of the shoe. The traction was so good that I felt like I could step up to any shot, take a breath, dig my feet in, and hit a good shot nearly every time.

Aside from price and the slight heel tightness, these shoes are a grand-slam. I highly recommend them to all golfers that are a 9 handicap or better.
