According to the Los Angeles Times, yesterday, the L.A. City Council announced that this Wednesday (8/24) will be forever known as “Kobe Bryant Day.”
While today is Kobe’s birthday, he’s 38 by the way, tomorrow’s date commemorates the two jersey numbers the Mamba wore as a Laker — 8 and 24. He will be honored at L.A. City Hall on Wednesday.
“Among his astonishing list of accomplishments, Kobe Bryant’s 20-year career with the Los Angeles Lakers ranks him No. 1 all-time for NBA players who played for a single franchise, and ‘Kobe Bryant Day’ is the City of Los Angeles’ way of thanking him for his single-minded dedication to excellence, the fans and the entire City and region of Los Angeles,” L.A. City Councilman Huizar said in a statement.
This latest news comes just days after Kobe Bryant unveiled his $100 million venture capitalist fund with Jeff Stibel. According to the Wall Street Journal, the fund will invest in technology, media, and data companies, and will be based in the Los Angeles area. The new firm, Bryant Stibel, is not seeking outside investors yet — that means that just Kobe and Stibel have contributed the $100 million. To read more about the new firm, click here.
It looks like retirement is getting sweeter and sweeter for the Mamba — just look at his beard! Will you be celebrating “Kobe Bryant Day?” We know Jarron will be! Share your thoughts below.
I think this is ridiculous. What has Kobe done for LA other than play basketball. Personally, i think Magic has done more for the community but he doesn’t get a day.
Please think outside the box. It’s not ridiculous. Kobe popularity has a big impact on the city economy.
