Unless you’re really into cross training footwear, minimalist running, crossfit, or know of Tony Post, you’ve probably never heard of the brand, Topo Athletic. They don’t have a cult following, they don’t appeal to the sneakerhead crowd, and they do not have a traditional design. But, here on WearTesters we try to remember that performance shoes are designed and constructed with a functional purpose at the forefront of the process. With that said, we’d like to introduce our readers to Topo Athletic in our first official Brand Spotlight feature on the site. Topo was founded by Tony Post when he left his position as CEO of Vibram FiveFingers.
Taken directly from their site (check it out!):
Topo Athletic is a brand created for and by athletes with a mission to develop athletic gear made with humble innovation.
“Humble” because we know quite well that our equipment doesn’t make you better—you make you better. Our role is to help.
“Innovation” because we are committed to the ongoing study of physiology, environments, and emerging technologies that enable athletes to constantly improve.
The brand launched with 3 initial models with a split toe design. They featured a 3 point anchor system for superior stability, natural transition, and explosive capability on toe off and changes of direction.
The RX, a versatile cross training shoe with a midfoot strap and other support overlays for a lockdown fit for changing direction.
The RR, a feather light, sleek design with the innovative usage of the boa lacing system for consistent lockdown that will never trouble a runner with snags and untying problems. Furthermore, the RR features an even thinner midsole with a zero from from heel to toe to promote a natural running gait.
And finally, the model that will be featured in a performance review on our site in the very near future. The RT, a traditional lace design with moderate cushion and a zero drop from heel to toe.
Since then they have released closed toe models on the same chassis and design basis, with names bases starting with ‘S’. Furthermore, they continue to release shoes optimized for hiking and the trail. We will be showing you those soon now that the brand has been introduced. Let us know what you think of the brand, what you think of our planned efforts to spotlight lesser known brands now and again going forward, and if you would be interested in the performance review of the RT below!
