If you’re anything like me, when you hear Augusta, your heart skips about six beats. You think of the trees towering over Magnolia Lane, Scottie Scheffler’s recent dominance, or that farm animals were hosted at Augusta National during World War 2. I can’t help but feel that Augusta nostalgia when writing about the Edgar 1.
Edgar Evans Jr. at Ordered Steps Athletics is trying to give you one more reason to appreciate Augusta. Founded around 2020, they’ve been a staple for Georgia residents and golfers alike.
When it comes to golf shoes, the Edgar 1 is a breath of fresh air. The style takes a jump back in history. I’m reminded of golf shoes from the 1990s.
If you’ve been searching far and wide for a company that started from the bottom and rose to the top, you’ll enjoy learning the history and performance of the Edgar 1. Let’s jump in.
Edgar 1
Price: $160
Sizing: No half sizes available, if you’re in between sizes order a half size up
Fit
While the website claims that the Edgar 1 runs slightly large, I noticed the opposite.
They don’t do half sizes and I was instructed to order an 11 instead of a 12. I wear an 11.5 and they fit me REALLY tight.
Order a size larger than you normally do. The Edgar 1 is a narrow golf shoe so if you have wide feet, I’d look elsewhere all together.
My feet felt squished while playing. They didn’t hurt my feet too bad, but if you have claustrophobic feet then these are not the shoes for you.
The fit was so tight that I felt like the other performance areas took a hit such as the traction and comfort. My feet were so squished that it was harder to focus on the task at hand. If you’ve worn baseball cleats, that’s what the fit and shape of the Edgar 1 reminded me of.
Traction
Traction is the top aspect of the Edgar 1 with consistency every round.
The Edgar 1 features three spikes in the front, two in the middle, and three in the back.
Alongside the spikes, rubberized traction is included. The mix of the two created solid results. If traction is your biggest concern when buying golf shoes, the Edgar 1 will work but the traction isn’t a good enough reason to ignore the negative aspects of the Edgar 1.
Comfort
In golf terms, the comfort of the Edgar 1 scored a double bogey.
I could feel all of the spikes on the bottom of my feet through the shoe’s midsole. That led to more soreness.
I usually play golf with a cart, and I still experienced a good amount of soreness. To my walking golfers, this isn’t the shoe for you.
Your feet might survive a range session or a quick trip to the putting green, but they won’t provide the type of comfort most golfers need on the course.
Support
Depending on the course, you’ll be walking 10,000 steps or more throughout your round. In fact, if you’re playing Pinehurst, you might even walk 20,000 steps in a round.
The Edgar 1 would have your feet shedding tears after a 20,000 step round. The Edgar 1 doesn’t list any major technology to help with support on the course which leads me to believe we are dealing with minimal or below average material.
You’ll be fine at the range or the putting green, but I’m wary of the support offered for our walking crowd especially…
Price
The Edgar 1 is currently retailing for $110.
Price isn’t the issue here. $110 is well below average for golf shoes but I think that for the quality they’re overpriced.
For budget golf shoes, put them on the list as a second or third choice.
For example, check out the New Balance 574 Greens v2.
The Edgar 1 is a solid beginner golf shoe, but there are better shoes at a similar price point.
For those that prefer to buy with a cause, 10% of profits go to youth that can’t afford golf equipment and lessons.
Edgar 1 Summary
Edgar Evans Jr. is still in the early stages with Ordered Step Athletics. There will be improvement and the Edgar 1 showed potential, but potential isn’t a good reason to buy a golf shoe.
The Edgar 1 isn’t a bad golf shoe but it has some work to do before I can confidently recommend them to you.
In all honesty, you can play golf in any shoe. The difference is the level of comfort and support you’re looking for. Comfort and support are extremely accessible when it comes to golf shoes, so it’s pretty easy to find a better option than the Edgar 1. Just check our other golf shoe reviews.
Aside from the sub-par comfort and support, I like the Edgar 1 and I’m excited to see what Ordered Steps Athletics brings us next.
How the Author Golfs
Tyler Allred (19 handicap): Golfs 2-3 times a week spending the bulk of his time playing actual rounds. Mostly pushes himself to improve every part of his game, but also enjoys a casual round of golf every now and then.
