Curry Fox 1 Show
The Curry Fox 1 is the first sneaker within Curry Brand that doesn’t belong to Steph Curry, which, right off the bat, is pretty cool. This is Sacramento Kings star De’Aaron Fox’s first signature shoe with Curry Brand. The Fox 1 is very visually striking, and it’s reasonably priced; but it isn’t a particularly original offering from Curry Brand/Under Armour.
As far as tech and on-court performance, the Fox 1 is more of the same. The shoe features a basic version of Under Armour’s Flow technology. In fact, it is equipped with the same tooling as the Curry 1 Flotro; so if you’ve played in that shoe, there’s no need to keep reading. Performance is virtually identical. Now, if you haven’t played in the Curry 1 Flotro, let’s get into the review and see how the Curry Fox 1 will perform on court.
Curry Fox 1 Review
Curry Fox 1 Traction
Traction on the Curry Fox 1 is excellent, just like in every other Under Armour/Curry Brand shoe that features Flow tech. Flow is super grippy and offers excellent multidirectional coverage, and, as long as you’re on a clean, indoor surface, it’s one of the best and most consistent traction setups out there.
But Flow isn’t perfect. It tends to accumulate debris faster than other traction setups, so it can get very slippery on dusty surfaces. It also offers very little outdoor durability. Since Flow has no traditional rubber sole (the midsole foam also acts as the traction pattern), it gets chewed up quickly when playing on abrasive surfaces like blacktop.
Curry Fox 1 Cushion
Cushion on the Curry Fox 1 is again nothing new. If you’ve played in shoes that feature Flow, you know what to expect. It’s dense and reactive, it offers a lot of court feel, and it provides a very fluid ride on court. The slab of foam on the Curry Fox 1 is not particularly thick, so court feel is abundant. But that means impact protection is minimal.
Flow is a cushioning system better suited for light, agile players who are looking for something speedy and reactive with a lot of stability. If you are looking for above-average impact protection or squishy compression, this is not the setup for you.
Curry Fox 1 Materials
Once again, this aspect of the shoe is nothing to write home about. Everything featured on the Curry Fox 1 is functional, but very basic. The upper is 100% synthetic and features mostly textiles, with some fuse overlays and synthetic leather portions at the heel of the shoe. Everything works well together as far as containment goes, and this material setup keeps the shoe light and well-ventilated.
If you enjoy modern basketball shoe builds, you will like the Fox 1. However, it is the signature shoe of one of the premiere 2-guards in the NBA, and it would have been nice to see Curry Brand use some premium materials on this model. For what it’s worth, there is a semi-functional midfoot strap.
Curry Fox 1 Support
Support of the Curry Fox 1 is elite, as it is in most of Steph Curry’s shoes. This is very important for Curry and his playing style. Steph has always been prone to ankle injuries, so having a stable, supportive shoe is a must; and this also aids his frenetic, shot-heavy playing style. Clearly, De’Aaron Fox enjoys similar performance features.
The outsole is very wide and features a prominent outrigger. The Fox 1 is equipped with a robust, external heel counter as well as a TPU spring plate that provides torsional rigidity and a little spring in your step. All this, combined with the lockdown provided by the upper of the shoe, makes the Fox 1 a very stable and secure basketball shoe.
Curry Fox 1 Fit
The Curry Fox 1 fits true-to-size, but it is a very snug, 1-to-1 fit. As long as you give the shoe time to break in, you shouldn’t have any issues. Of course, if you don’t like this type of fit, or if you have a wide foot, you can always go a half size up. As always, if you have any concerns, go in-store to try them on first.
Curry Fox 1 Overall
The Curry Fox 1 is comfortably above average as far as a basketball shoe goes. It is, however, a niche model. The Curry Fox 1 is better suited for lighter, shiftier, guard-style players who play on well-kept indoor courts. If that’s you, the Fox 1 will be a great shoe. In any other situation, there are probably better shoes available.
Flow isn’t a great option for outdoor play, and it is not the most plush cushioning system. So if you want to be able to play outdoors, or you need a little extra cushioning in your shoes, the Fox 1 is not for you. It may not be the most versatile shoe, but if you like this type of hoop shoe, you will thoroughly enjoy the Fox 1.
