The SpeedForm Amp 3.0 is Under Armour’s latest trainer and it’s looking to fix the hangups of the last model.
If there is one thing Under Armour knows it is training. Whether for a specific sport or overall fitness, Under Armour has been a staple in weightrooms and on tracks for over 20 years. Last year, the brand released an almost-great trainer in the Amp 2.0 (reviewed here). The shoe only really had one weakness: the construction of the upper materials, which didn’t allow the shoe to fit well until after several wears.
The Speedform Amp 3.0 remedies that with a new, all-knit upper that is form-fitting and soft on the foot. The burrito-wrap of the 2.0 is also gone, replaced by the popular one-piece sock upper.
The midsole/outsole tooling stayed the same; it uses the same open window arch and stability rails on the midfoot. Basic EVA foam is used for what little cushioning there is, but that isn’t a bad thing in a trainer like this. The studded outsole is perfect for any activity — turf work, weight room, or light running.
In place of the burrito wrap, Under Armour went with a midfoot saddle that uses criss-cross pull-loops for lockdown and stability. Yeah, it works.
Under Armour also went back to the SpeedForm origins with the heel cup/insole combo; the inside liners all mold into one piece and form a soft but sturdy support system.
We would love to give some information on the release date and retail, but at this time none is available. These are out to us early for a performance review, so be on the lookout for that soon. Based on last year’s model, a price of $120 would seem to be the target.
Let us know what you think of the new SpeedForm Amp 3.0. Did you grab a pair last year? Does the idea of open arch confuse or frighten you? Do you even workout like that? Let us know below.
We have this shoe at our store. The last Amp did not sell well at all, we have some marked down to $29.99. Those who we could get to buy it did like it. The new one is better and is at $100. The training category is a small group and the cross fit folks are tough to get away from the Metcon and Nano. However, the Nano is quickly going away. We will see how it goes, but the $100 price point will help a little.
Thanks for the price info – I couldn’t find anything anywhere about it. Release was slated for July 1 but there was no info. Definitely a better shoe than the 2.
DUKE4005, glad to help.
Hi Tim,
If you don’t mind me asking? Where do you work? I’ve been trying to find the Amps to try on in person rather than ordering but just like a lot of UA products. There never in the stores. I am in Los Angeles and wanted to see if we had one of your stores in my area. Thanks!
FLIPSOLO,
We do not have any stores in CA. The closest store is in Reno, NV. Wish I could help.
Thank you!
