The reigning NBA MVP Stephen Curry will be a part of the Under Amour family until at least 2024.
Before we get started, let it be clear that this is a huge win for Under Amour and not a loss for Nike. Stephen Curry leaving the Swoosh for Under Amour was – and still is – viewed as a loss to Nike, rather than a win for Under Amour. While Nike is still the king at sportswear in the world, Under Amour has come a long way from the little brand that made a cameo in Any Given Sunday, to the second best selling sportswear company in North America.
Since joining Under Amour, Stephen Curry has become the MVP in the world’s most premier basketball league and NBA champion, as well as the number 1 vote getter in the NBA All-Star game (yes, he beat LeBron and Kobe). His success on the court has translated to sneaker sales as the Under Amour Curry 1 not only performed well on the hardwood, but in retail stores around the world with sales up 40 percent last quarter. Now with Curry being signed to UA until 2024 – hopefully we get to see the Curry 12 – UA’s future looks bright and well.
For more information on the deal which included equity stake in the company, check out Darren Rovell’s report on ESPN.com.
Go Steph Curry!! Now that’s a long contract.
Long contract, but I am sure it will pay off in the end for UA. UA’S come a long way and hopefully they can continue to revolutionize their tech. Also hopefully they keep the prices down in the future, like they have been doing for the curry 1 and the upcoming curry 2.
Great stuff from UA to lock up Curry. Looks like missing out on Kevin Durant turned out much better for them than they ever thought. I wonder, if they have of actually gotten Durant, would they still have also been able to get Curry? I assume Curry’s current contract is also less money than they offered Durant to move from Nike?
Did they release the details (money wise) of this extension?
well, Durant would have gotten some better shoes than the crap that Nike is designing for him.
Curry just secured his own future with a stake in UA. He’s going to make boatloads for years, especially if their net revenue and growth continue the past year’s trends.
good for him
