I’ve been reporting on products equipped with Vibram outsoles for years, but i’d never actually witnessed how they were made. Well, PENSOLE Footwear Design Academy and OSDLIVE (Obsessive Sneaker Disorder) did just that.
The Vibram factory is located in North Brookfield, MA, and during the tour workers there showed guests the entire “baking” process as well as equipment used to test the products the brand makes.
“I visited the Vibram factory along with PENSOLE Footwear Design Academy team to get a closer look at the factory and see how their iconic soles and footwear were made,” Dee Wells, the founder of OSD told WearTesters.
OSD, a multimedia and brand marketing company, used to host a weekly sneaker talk show that was launched in 2007. Since, it reached its 300th episode in 2014 and surpassed six million downloads. Guests on the show include Tinker Hatfield, Bobbito Garcia, Phife Dawg of a Tribe Called Quest, DJ Clark Kent, and D’Wayne Edwards, the founder of PENSOLE.
“I learned about the ‘baking’ process that it takes to make different soles…there are number of ingredients used to make different soles,” continued Wells. “Creating the mixture was similar to making a cake and I found this very interesting. The most impressive thing that I saw is Vibram’s innovation; they continue to solve problems and they’re not resting on the laurels.”
