The Nike Hyperdunk 2016 Flyknit Deconstructed

Thanks to the good people at fastpass.cn we can all take a look at the Nike Hyperdunk 2016 Flyknit deconstructed.

In Nightwing2303’s video on the Hyperdunk 2016 Flyknit he mentioned that the toe featured glued Flyknit while the rest of the upper was true Flyknit. Well, he was right (not surprising…). When you pull off the Flyknit upper you can see a glue backing that extends from the toe to the medial and lateral sides of the upper. The backing also reinforces the Flywire eyestay. Peep the built in tongue.

At 6.34 mm thick the full-length Zoom unit in the Hyperdunk 2016 Flyknit is thinner than most heel and forefoot units. Coupled with the 1.72 mm clear Zoom window, that’s a total thickness of 8.06 mm. For comparison, the forefoot Zoom unit in the SF3 was 11.64 millimeters thick; the forefoot unit in the Jordan XXX was 11.08 millimeters; the forefoot unit in the LeBron Soldier 10 is 8.73 millimeters thick (but the heel is a whopping 14.25 millimeters thick so it isn’t lacking in cushion).

  1. Even with the thinner zoom the cored out sole will provide additional cushion, but still underhwelmed.

  2. Yep, NW was right again. LoL! It’s always fascinating to me to see these deconstructed images. It gives more insight into what you’re paying for. That zoom does seem thin comparatively speaking but I wonder what it feels like under foot. Even more curious is I wonder what the forefoot and heel of the non-Elite models will be like. Thanks for the article Noah.

    1. Thank the people at fastpass for chopping it up! From what I’ve heard this full-length setup feels great underfoot. Gotta wait for Jarron’s performance review to get the full scoop.
Tooling of the non-Elite models is the same underfoot. Just fuse and mesh on the upper.

      1. Ah ok. I thought that the other models might be segmented. It’ll be good if they are the same for consistency. Thanks.

  3. Wondering if all shoes have the same cushion thickness across sizes? I mean, wouldn’t it be weird to have the same cushion thickness in a size 8 shoe as compared to a size 14? Or would the difference be too negligible?

  4. Keeping in mind – Measuring a cut open zoom unit is not a good direct comparison to a enclosed/pressurized unit. It should be slightly thicker than 6.34mm. If you look at the lebron soldier x deconstruct the measurement taken from the sectioned shoe is thinner (12.79mm) than the full air bag (14.25mm).

    1. Correction – the sectioned heel measurement was on the soldier 9! But, same argument holds – the 9 and 10 could very well have the same thickness because one was cut opened and measured while th other was still in tact and pressurized

    2. They could have taken the unit out and measured it, then put it back together and cut it. I don’t see the point in measuring a cut zoom unit either.

      1. Looking at the second photo within the article, it appears they are measuring the cut open unit. Which yeah, like you said, doesn’t make much sense. If we include what Zoom24 said about the Soldier X, a pressurized zoom unit is around 1.5 mm larger. Factoring that in, the Hyperdunk looks like its zoom wil be just under 8 mm.

  5. I’ve been loving these deconstruction posts as of late. It’s fascinating to see how these technologies and materials are implemented.

  6. Thanks for sharing the info, Noah.
Yeah good to know the Zoom Unit is full-length size, and window cut exposes 3/4th of it if I am not mistaken.

    Also, it is top loaded.
As we read, watch, and listen to Weartesters staff’s reviews on Zoom Models specifically: how dense the midsole is key as well in feeling the Zoom.

  7. This is a bitter sweet thing to see…only a little bitter BC they are cutting nice shoes in half but so much more sweet than that BC we(the consumer) can have some piece of mind on what shoes we spend our hard earned money on. Love it in the end …thanks for sharing!
