The New Balance Fresh Foam X 860 v14 is the brand’s high-end trainer / everyday running shoe, so expectations are high every time an 860 drops. As I understand it, last year’s model, the v13, was a bit of a letdown. Cushioning was lackluster, support wasn’t great, ventilation could have been better, etc. In general, there was a lot of room for improvement. But, what should New Balance improve? As a hybrid-style shoe, should New Balance lean more towards lifestyle use or performance? Well, New Balance chose to boost performance.

However, with all New Balance’s performance improvements, the New Balance Fresh Foam X 860 v14 is still more of a “training shoe”. It is not an elite running shoe. Seasoned runners, who are going to put in tons of miles and need “the best of the best” might need a bit more than what the 860 offers. That being said, the shoe is well-equipped enough to handle almost anything mere mortals can throw at it.
This is perfect for a mere mortal like myself.
I am not a runner. I run a good amount to stay in shape for basketball, but I am by no means a runner, and the 860 does exactly what I need.
I am 36 years old, 6’3″ and weigh 220 lbs. It is safe to say that I enjoy shoes with potent cushioning that remain stable as I use them. Those are the two best features of the 860. So, with all this being said, let’s get into the New Balance 860 v14 performance review.
Note: Everysize, a fantastic new sneaker search engine that allows users to search for any shoe they want, find multiple options/prices for buying, and see other similar footwear options, provided us with this pair of the New Balance Fresh Foam 860 v14 to facilitate this review. Everysize (and New Balance) had no involvement in this review, didn’t receive an advance look at it, and has not attempted to influence it.
New Balance Fresh Foam X 860 v14 Performance
New Balance Fresh Foam X 860 v14 Traction
The outsole of the New Balance Fresh Foam X 860 v14 is designed with durability and reliable traction in mind, making it well-suited for asphalt and other typical road surfaces. The rubber used in the outsole is New Balance’s Endurance rubber, which has been strategically placed to provide solid grip but primarily to boost outsole durability. The design features a combination of vertical and “suction cup style” grooves that provide a wide, flat, and stable base and promote smooth transitions during runs.
One thing to keep in mind is that, although the outsole is durable, it’s probably not a good idea to use these for trail running. The 860 performs exceptionally well on paved surfaces, but there are large portions of the Fresh Foam X midsole exposed through the sole of the shoe which would get chewed up quickly out in the wilderness.
New Balance Fresh Foam X 860 v14 Cushioning
Cushioning in the 860 v14 has seen a notable improvement from the previous version. The shoe features a dual-density setup of New Balance’s Fresh Foam X technology, which provides a softer and more responsive feel underfoot. I have to say, I very much enjoyed this setup. The top layer of this dual-density setup is softer to boost comfort and impact protection, while the bottom layer (in my model it is neon green) is firmer to enhance stability and support in strategic positions of the shoe.
The majority of this more stable foam runs along the medial side of the shoe. Most non-neutral runners are overpronators (they collapse inward a bit more as they run) which is why stability is boosted in this area.
Also, the midsole height has been increased by 2 mm, offering more plushness; and the drop has been reduced from 10 mm to 8 mm, which aligns with the growing preference among runners for lower-drop shoes. The cushioning is well-balanced, making it ideal for runs of one to six miles. However, it’s important to note that while the cushioning is softer than before, it still retains a slightly firm feel, which might not appeal to those seeking an ultra-plush ride or those that need more cushion due to extra time on feet or distances closing in on double digits.
New Balance Fresh Foam X 860 v14 Materials
The materials used in the New Balance Fresh Foam X 860 v14 reflect the brand’s commitment to quality and durability. The upper is constructed from an engineered mesh that provides a VERY comfortable and secure fit while keeping the shoe light and well-ventilated. I have read complaints from some consumers regarding this feature. But, again, I found the 860 v14 very breathable. The shoe’s build quality is solid, with reinforced areas in the midfoot and heel that contribute to its overall sturdiness and lockdown.
The logos and different weave styles along the upper add some aesthetic touches and texture variations and also provide additional containment, particularly in the midfoot area. The tongue is well-padded and integrated into the upper to ensure it stays in place, further contributing to the overall comfort of the shoe.
New Balance Fresh Foam X 860 v14 Support
Support, along with the cushioning, is what makes this shoe so good and makes it an excellent choice for overpronators or runners who require elite stability. The dual-density midsole hides another trick up its sleeve. The shoe incorporates a new stability mechanism called the “Stability Plane”. If I saw this in a basketball shoe I would call it a full-length spring plate.
This design offers a smooth, springy ride and helps to control pronation. The stability provided by this spring plate (or plane) is subtle, yet effective, guiding the foot as you run without feeling overly “corrective” or restrictive. Additionally, the heel counter is rigid and offers a secure lockdown, ensuring that the foot stays in place, even during lateral movements.
New Balance Fresh Foam X 860 v14 Fit
The New Balance Fresh Foam x 860 v14 fits true to size, and, keeping in mind that I am accustomed to wearing basketball shoes, they feel super comfy and take no time to break in. The engineered mesh upper should adapt well to different foot shapes and provide a comfortable wrap without being too tight. The shoe also offers a good amount of room in the toe box, allowing for natural toe splay, which is crucial for comfort during longer runs.
New Balance Fresh Foam X 860 v14 Overall
The New Balance Fresh Foam X 860 v14 excels as a daily training shoe, especially for runners who need stability and support. Its durable construction, reliable traction, and balanced cushioning make it my go-to when it’s time to put in some miles on the pavement. The shoe is not designed for speed or more specific running styles. Its weight and stability features make it more suited for steady-paced runs; and, in that context, it will probably be a good option for even experienced long-distance runners.
The updates to the 860 v14, including the reduced drop, increased cushioning, and the introduction of the Stability Plane, make this shoe a considerable improvement on the v13. While the shoe may not appeal to those looking for a lightweight or highly responsive ride, it offers outstanding reliability and durability.
In summary, the New Balance Fresh Foam X 860 v14 is a well-rounded, stable shoe that delivers on its promise of support, comfort, and durability. Whether you’re a seasoned runner looking for a reliable daily trainer or a beginner needing extra stability, the 860 v14 is a shoe that won’t disappoint. Its improvements over previous versions make it a worthy update and a solid choice for runners who prioritize stability and comfort over speed.
New Balance Fresh Foam X 860 v14 Pros
- Fresh Foam X midsole softness
- Outsole traction and durability
- Ventilation
- Neutral stable
New Balance Fresh Foam X 860 v14 Cons
- Not long-run ready
- Basic upper
- Heavy by running shoe standards
Is the New Balance 860 v14 wide foot friendly?
Yes. The toe box is wide and the material in this portion of the shoe is forgiving. Lengthwise, the 860 v14 fits true to size; so go with your typical running size, and choose the width that suits you best.
Is the New Balance 860 v14 worth $140?
I very much enjoyed this sneaker. However, in my very particular situation, $140 for a running shoe feels steep. I am a basketball player, not a runner. If I’m spending more or less $300 a season on basketball shoes (one game shoe, one practice shoe), my budget to spend on a running shoe would be very limited.
That being said, if you are anything less than an expert runner, you would be hard pressed to find a more versatile stability running shoe than the New Balance Fresh Foam X 860 v14 at this price point. If you’re looking for one shoe that can handle basically any daily running you throw at it, this is a great pickup.
