Asics has collaborated with mita sneakers, Japan’s leading sneaker shop, to create the Gel-Kenun ‘Shinkai’.
The ‘Shinkai’ (deep sea or ocean depths) is, according to Japanican, inspired by the megalodon, a giant shark that lived approximately 23 to 2.5 million years ago. Fossils suggest that the megalodon was a much larger version of the great white shark.
This collab juxtaposes the deep sea theme with the cloud-inspired Gel-Kenun (kenun (巻雲) meaning cirrus, a type of cloud) to create a modern runner with an interesting story.
Notable details include the white teeth on the medial sides, mita sneakers’ famous chain link on the insoles, and red hits at the aglets and pull tabs.
The mita sneakers x Asics Gel-Kenun ‘Shinkai’ launches October 7 at mita sneakers in-store and online for 16,000 yen (approx. $140). There is no word on when or if this collab is coming Stateside but keep your eyes open as Asics accounts.
