Over a month ago adidas dropped hints regarding a “prototype” Ultra Boost release. Low and behold, the brand with Three Stripes has finally dropped the Ultra Boost Mid Prototype (MidProto).
We must thank Aurelien Longo, the senior footwear designer at adidas behind this design, for giving serious flare to what an Ultra Boost Mid looked like in its prototype stages.
“During the development of the Ultraboost Mid, we tried many different constructions and material executions,” wrote Longo in a statement. “As, at that time, factories didn’t have all the materials in correct colors, they sent us the first prototypes with random substitutes, different leathers and a bright solar yellow Primeknit sock.”
The upper features a Primeknit weave in a Neon Yellow with contrasting suede materials and white stitching throughout the shoe. Mismatching navy and grey overlays ride atop the ever-so-comfortable Boost midsole. The silhouette extends up onto the ankle with a thick collar.
“In the following months, the first prototypes were still laying around the office and we realized they were actually a pair (left and right),” Longo wrote. “There, we looked at it from another angle and we came up with the idea of releasing the pair as it was, with random and asymmetric colors and calling it ‘Ultraboost Mid Prototype’. It even comes with the original sample tag.”
The adidas Consortium Ultra Boost Mid Prototype dropped on May 26 for $220; hopefully, enthusiasts were able to grab a pair, and the shoe is still available (but not for long).
