Originally released in 1995, the Asics Gel-DS Trainer was a featherweight running shoe built for racing and high-mileage runs. Back over 20 years later in 2018, AsicsTiger says the shoe still performs.
Like most of Asics’ runners from the ’90s, the Gel-DS Trainer is equipped with Gel cushioning (that usually means a rectangle Gel unit in the forefoot and a more square unit in the heel). That cushioning is tried-and-true — people still run in Gel today, and my Gel-Lyte IIIs get more comfortable each time I wear them.
The Gel-DS Trainer features an interior bootie, like the more popular Gel-Lyte V, which technically makes the shoe a slip on. However, Asics says the 2018 Gel-DS Trainer retro is good for folks that “run every day or simply enjoy half an hour on [the] treadmill” so performance is still the shoe’s focus. The flexible DUOSOLE outsole technology should offer good traction and flexibility.
The Asics Gel-DS Trainer OG is available in four colorways for $110 at AsicsTiger.com.
