PEAK Team Lightning TP9 Performance Review

Yes, there are other brands besides Nike, Jordan & adidas… they play well with others too…

PEAK Team Lightning TP9 Performance Review 1

Traction – The traction starts off slick when indoors, even on a clean floor. After their break-in period it all ends up working really well… reminded me a lot of my Rose 3 experience. However, where these excel is outdoors. Not only that, but I was able to bring them from the outdoor courts to the indoor courts and they still played well – usually I ONLY hoop with a shoe indoor OR outdoor… never both since it affects the traction.

Cushion – The dual density foam setup is interesting. Impact protection is the main thing to focus on here as that’s exactly what it does. Its not springy or bouncy… it just does its job without being noticed. It allows you to feel the court in a really natural way… something that I think is awesome and blows away most ‘basic’ foams such as EVA.

PEAK Team Lightning TP9 Performance Review 3

Material – It’s become redundant for me to go over materials. There really isn’t much diversity anymore. There is fuse, fuse… and more fuse. Once in a while we see leather make a guest appearance but fuse is pretty much where brands are at. I understand why… its cheap to manufacture and its extremely efficient when putting the shoe together and most importantly… it works. But, I like to feel different things when playing. I loved sticking my foot into my broken in shoe and thinking; ‘Yeah, these feel awesome’.

Sorry for the rant… overall, the materials here are perfectly fine. Durable and supportive. I will give PEAK props because they did use patent leather on the toe and heel panels. This gives the design some depth and it gives it a more premium feel.

PEAK Team Lightning TP9 Performance Review 4

Fit – They fit true to size. I can’t say for certain that they will fit all foot shapes but from what I’ve experienced… they aren’t wide or narrow… sort of ‘just right’. I think if the wearer is patient – something a lot of footwear consumers seem to lack as of late – then they will be able to break most shoes in perfectly fine without issue. I know when you try something on in-store and you feel as if its tight so you automatically want to increase the size… that’s the wrong thing to do unless you legitimately have wide feet. Shoes are meant to be worn, creased and broken in.

Lockdown is great from the midfoot back. The toe loosens up slightly after the break-in period – since its patent leather – but it didn’t have a negative affect on their performance such as dead space. This is why getting your true size is important. If you go up 1/2 size just so you can wear the shoe quickly without breaking them in then once they have been broken in they wont fit properly.

PEAK Team Lightning TP9 Performance Review 5

Ventilation – The ventilation is great. Materials are supportive enough while allowing a ton of air flow. Not much to say other than its one of the better shoes if you’re looking for something ventilated.

PEAK Team Lightning TP9 Performance Review 6

Support – Overall support is good. There is a TPU shank for arch and torsional support which works perfectly fine. Only complaint I have is that the fuse is very thin so after long periods of play they will lose some of its strength. Its not a huge issue but something that I noticed.

PEAK Team Lightning TP9 Performance Review 7

Overall – I’m impressed. I know that PEAK isn’t a new brand – they’re just new to me – and they have been around this long for a reason. I’m happy that I was finally able to try them out for myself and see what they were all about. If you enjoy great foam cushion in a durable package (outsole and upper) then these will do the trick. They are available within the States now as well – HERE – so if you hoop outdoors then I’d give these a try. They won’t disappoint.

  1. Thanks for the review. The nearest store me right now that sells this has it half size bigger than my regular size 9 and they fit well. Since you mentioned that it won’t be a good idea to go half size bigger and it would be much better to break-in a true to size shoe, I’m glad I went with the cp3 VII’s based on your performance review and got a pair of those yesterday.

I might go and check if other stores have this in my normal size and see how those fit and I’ll have a dedicated outdoor shoe and use the cp3’s indoors.

Again, thank you for your great reviews!

  2. These have herringbone traction on the upper. Lol. Mmm…not pliable upper…how about ductile or malleable next time haha. Luv u tho :-*…..

  3. We get these shoes in China for about 300RMB, which is about 50 dollars
I do think the size is a little bit bigger though, I usually wear US10 but for these shoes I wear US9.5
Material-wise I don’t think it could get 9, Peak always uses very cheap materials, you’d see your TP9’s fuse parts turn yellow in several months, that’s what happened to mine
One thing I like a lot about these shoes is that its insole provides a bit of arch support, which is great for me

      1. In my experience my hyperfuse turned yellow after a few months outdoors ehile the clear air max panels turned cloudy yellow as well, which is due to strong UV exposure from what i read somewhere..

    1. Plastic becomes brittle with age and can crack/ split. While in good condition, it plays fine. Sounds like someone has something against PEAK to me. If you dont like a brand then just say so.

      1. I’m Chinese and I’m proud of my country’s brand, I’m simply giving you the information that a lot of Chinese people have known. Don’t take it personal and know that I love this brand.

The durability of these shoes is a problem that many people have given their feedback. Some people’s TP9’s upper cracks in 2 games. How long have you been playing in these?

          1. I bought them in June and haven’t had any issues either, lucky for us.

However, it’s true that many people have this problem with their TP9s, usually it happens in a month or 2.

Here’s some links from a Chinese forum, if you’re interested you could check them, delete the spaces in the links.

          2. Wuke

My wife is from the Mainland…Nanjing, China to be exact…she and her relatives won’t buy Nike shoes from China…stating..that Nike’s at the Nike store feels cheaper…and her Uncle in Shanghai makes me buy him LBJ’s low here versus the retail stores in China. China retail stores has more strict return policy versus the US…it could be US and probably Europe protect the consumer more and thus Peak has use more durable material.

Also take in account Wuke, the air where NW2303 lives is cleaner….my in laws from Nanjing and Shanghai, can’t believe how clean the air is in Southern California (near Disneyland) where I live. I remember NW2303 lives up in Northern Cali which has more rain..so the air is more fresh.

You have to take in account different same product, different standards per country….trust me…I was in Macau, Taipei, HK, Kuma Lumpar, etc…some the Nike stuff felt like off and so I wouldn’t be surprise if Peak did the same

          3. probably it’s just they release different quality for mainland china compared to america/europe…..happens all the time with electronics stuff

diferrent place, different price, different quality

          4. To porkchopbun:

I currently live in a small town in Louisiana, the air quality is not the problem..they turned yellow faster than any of my white shoes… Sometimes foreign brands like Nike sell different quality products in China, that is true. I remember that Japenese brands like Asics and Mizuno always sell the best quality products in Japen, and the overall quality and material they use are often different, however not for most products. The most recent case that there’s a huge difference I can remember is that HYPERDUNK 2011’s Chinese version doesn’t have forefoot zoom. Your wife’s uncle let you buy him LBJ’s shoes probably because they are cheaper in US, since a lot of middle-age people in China don’t know how to find real products online, they don’t trust online shopping, and the retail price in China are always higher than the retail price in US, so it’s reasonable for him to ask you to buy him shoes.

As for Peak’s shoes, I think it’s possible that they use different materials, since the Peak shoes in US have all the sizes(they don’t sell sizes that are bigger than US11 in China), and there’s a different colorway of TP9 in their online store which can’t be find in China. However, base on the pictures and videos NW2303 gave, I can say that they use the same material…

I think there’s two reasons why his TP9s don’t have problems yet (like mine): Fisrt, He’s not a “heavy” shoe user, I don’t know how to discribe it properly but you can see from the pictures that his shoes still look in good condition, I treat my shoes in the same way. Like I said, I bought my TP9 (Chinese version) in June, and there’s still no cracks yet. Probably because I don’t play like some players who do moves that can damage the shoes or just don’t care about their shoes. Second, we have more “normal” foot shape. However most Chinese people have very wide forefoot which could damage the shoes while doing moves like crossover.

All I’m saying is, according to many Chinese people’s feedback, TP9’s upper’s durability does have problem and could not last as long as other fuses. Maybe they play in the shoes too hard or it’s just a problem you’ll see in time. The material of the NW2303’s TP9 looks the same as mine so I wouldn’t say it’s a problem that only Chinese TP9s have. Just wanted to state this problem so that people could take this into consideration.

            1. My TP9’s are from China actually so we likely have the same shoe with the same materials. My mesh has yellowed a bit I suppose but I just thought it was dirt from playing in them. I get stepped on quite often – being a smaller player on the floor – and they held up for me just fine. I’ve had LeBrons, Jordans and Kobes all break on me or rip at some point from wear and tear so I personally don’t see that as a flaw on the brands behalf unless it happens really quickly… like my issue with the XX8’s ripping. That was a design flaw and they fixed it with future releases. I am light footed, meaning I dont put unnecessary weight or strain on my feet unless needed. The few times Ive put a lot of weight on one foot is when I’ve rolled my ankles… last time I did that was in the Kobe 7 and I havent done it since.

  4. These shoes blew me away… The fit is outstanding, comfort on the court unbelievable, exactly what NW says… All performance with no fluff. I own Jordan XX8, XI, Kobe 8 and 6, Lebron X, Rose 3.0, CP3.6 AE, WoW Encore, and these currently. The more I play in them the more I realize they are almost on par with Jordan XX8. I am a huuuuuge fan of these shoes and I thing they represent bang for buck. I play in two leagues, one on weekends on crap floors and one during week on awesome floors. These are some of the few shoes that work well on both surfaces. I didn’t experience any slickness during break in period. I will be getting a second pair

    1. Wow blue that says a whole lot, you liking these almost as much as the xx8 that’s 3x it’s price! Im really sad they ran out of my size where i come from, but that just gives me more reason to cop the Tony Parker 1.

      1. Yea they are one of the few shoes I like to wear around the house just because they are so comfy… Nightwing was spot on with the cushion section. When you put the shoe on it doesn’t feel like anything special since it is low profile. On the court though it’s insane since you can feel the floor but your feet and joints still feel great after playing. I am seriously so high on these bad boys, the only thing that makes Jordan XX8 better IMHO is the decoupled heel and forefoot. It’s so nice I bought the SE Blue Camo version heheheheh

  5. I actually got the black cw in last week. While I haven’t gotten as much run in them as NW, I did get some time in them and they work really, really well for the price. I’ll be it makes the top 10 performance list this year, probably somewhere between 6-10. I’d say maybe higher, but it’s been a great year for performance kicks. The cushion setup really is unique. If I were to describe it, I’d say it’s like Cushion-3 without the springy responsiveness. That’s not a knock. Gradient Dual still works really well, just doesn’t have that spring back I get with Cushion-3.

  6. i got mine around 2months ago to play outdoors in.. mine’s a black pair, so far, no prob. initially it felt heavy for me, but after a while, i no longer noticed it. BTW, this shoe is quite popular here, due to the “recent” nba finals where everyone wanted to know what parker was wearing.

  7. I ve been super high on these shoes for so long but just found a warning for people that may buy them. I have worn them 6 times and I noticed last night, both mesh vent panels on the lateral side of the shoe, right over the pinky toe, the mesh has ripped. It does not effect the structural stability of the shoe since it is the mesh panel, just a little annoying that it would happen after only a handful of wears. It’s too bad because I really like them on court and was thinking about getting a second pair…

  8. I’m thinking of copping this instead of the hyperdunk 2013. My concerns are the cushion and support. What are your thoughts? Thanks.

  9. “Fit – They fit true to size.”

Thanks for performance review… How their sizing goes in comparison with Nike?
I wear Nike US 9 (UK 8, EUR 42.5) but most Nikes run 1/2 small.
Should I wear Peak US 8.5?

  10. I have both the “team lightning” and the TP-1. They are both awesome performers. Needless to say more but I Love them! Thanks NW! If it weren’t for ur review I wouldn’t have decided to get them!

  11. Hey Nightwing2303 🙂

I was just wondering, Are these and the TP1’s high cut shoes or more low cut? I cant seem to figure that out.
    Thanks love your work!

  12. I just received this shoes, very cheap because the distributor in Malaysia(carandcompany) is having sales. It is MYR 180 including shipping, down from MYR 328. We asian usually doesnt has indoor court, normally cement court with roof is considered indoor. I owned Hyperdunk 2012(sole doesnt last that long), Jordan Super Fly(for wide feet) and UA Anatomix Spawn( best traction n narrow than Superfly). And now this TP 9, Size not accurate as other brand. My size is 270mm or UK 8.5 but normally wear UK 9. This shoes is US 9.5 or EU 43( UK 9), i have 1″ extra. I will review this shoe later.
I believe China companies are started to produce quality basketball shoes for outdoor, some companies have copy of famous brand but quality is quite bad. Basketball is big market for them and Asia. Everything is made in China.
