Errolson Hugh, co-founder of ACRONYM, has unveiled his fourth project with Nike: two Air VaporMax Moc 2 colorways with incredibly graphic uppers.
In 2015, Hugh worked on a Lunar Force 1 for Nike, the year after a fan-favorite Presto, and in 2017 he blessed an AF1 Downtown. According to Nike, each one of his past collaborations solved a discrete functional problem.
Now, on the Air VaporMax Moc 2, Hugh took a much different approach. “There is absolutely nothing retro about it. It’s so forward,” Hugh said in a statement. “The physical aspect of it, once the laces are removed and with the elastic tongue…there is not really much that we felt we wanted to do functionally because it’s great.”
Instead, the team at ACRONYM designated the shoe as a visual project. According to Nike, the team experimented with graphic applications that conveyed aggression and speed — and kept pushing the boundaries while keeping the shoe wearable.
Hugh and his team finally decided on a unique camouflage that is constructed using his brand’s wordmark. Through trial and error, it was discovered that printing the pattern onto the finished knit upper was the way to go because the graphic would deform when the Flyknit was stretched over the last and attached to the VaporMax outsole.
“The patterning is basically the A from Acronym,” said Hugh in a statement. “It’s the original shape, and then it just gets turned into a grid. Each of the intersecting lines of the A inside the square makes the surface, and we just delete and inverse the various surfaces that result from those intersections. It makes for a kind of progression that you get these surprising shapes out of.”
