The Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 35 Uses New Cushioning Inspired by the Vaporfly 4%

2018 marks 35 years since the Air Zoom Pegasus debuted. In one of its cleanest iterations yet, the Air Zoom Pegasus 35 has several significant upgrades over last year’s model.

While the mesh cut and sew upper from the Air Zoom Pegasus 34 returns on the Air Zoom Pegasus 35, it flaunts a much different look than the outgoing model. The midsole technology is still a mix of Zoom Air and Cushlon for a responsive ride, but top-tier Nike technologies have trickled down into this $120 performance runner.

Instead of using the traditional forefoot and heel Zoom units, the Air Zoom Pegasus 35 features a full-length articulated Zoom Air unit that is inspired by the Nike Zoom Vaporfly 4%.

According to Nike, designers combined the two airbags used in the previous Pegasus to create one that mimics the shape of the Vaporfly 4%’s curved carbon fiber plate. In the Vaporfly 4%, that plate actually propels the wearer into her next step; in the Pegasus 35 it should offer better transition and improve how responsive the cushioning is.

The tongue has also changed; it is now notched to help wearers get in and out of the shoe. The heel is also beveled to improve with “touchdown,” but that change seems mostly aesthetic. Now, the latest Pegasus matches the styling of Nike’s top-tier running models.

According to Nike, designers also moved the bottom eyelet to offer more flex within the shoe. With weartesting insights from the United Kingdom’s most successful distance runner, Mo Farah, the collar is now directed away from the Achilles.

Finally, the women’s Air Zoom Pegasus 35 will feature slightly softer Cushlon foam that is tuned specifically for the female foot.

The Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 35 will debut in the women’s ‘Elemental Rose’ colorway pictured here on May 17 at Eastbay.com. A ‘Crimson’ colorway for both men and women will release on June 1 at Nike.com and at select retailers. The latest Pegasus model gets a $10 bump in price from the outgoing model to $120.
