adidas UltraBoost Uncaged – First Impressions

Ooooohhhhh yeah. adidas has Uncaged the UltraBoost, officially (there are many videos out there of how to do it yourself, but now you don’t have to).

Taking the plastic support cages off the sides makes the shoe that much sleeker and clean and eliminates the hotspots some had from the last lace bars. The new version keeps the same midsole as the original UB. You should all know how Boost works and what we at WearTesters think about it (if you don’t, see this, this, and this) — the cushioning is no issue.

The upper is full-on Primeknit except for the collar, which has some added elastic areas around the heel, and the lace holes, which have some added glue/fuse over the holes to keep ripping out to a minimum. The outsole is the beefier ST web, with Continental rubber to take the wear and tear. These are, after all, running shoes.

Just from initial try on and first wear, the sizing is VERY true to size. If you like a true skin-like 1-to-1 feel, stay true. If you like a little wiggle room up front, go up a half size. If you like a LOT of wiggle room, because you like to wiggle, go a full size up. These fit a half size smaller than the Ultra Boost or ST, but the materials allow the stretch, so it’s still comfy in all the right spots.

Release date is next week, June 29 to be specific, and the retail price is $180 (originally rumored to be $220, but I think the new price suits just fine). There are three colorways coming on that date (as seen here), and probably many more not long after.

Enjoy the video, I hope, and as always, words and punctuation below.

  1. Cool looking box, is it the standard box when you buy it at the store or online?

Looking forward to the comparison and review, Thanks in Advance!

  2. Love the Ultra boosts, but they were a little too tight for me. Definitely interested in trying these 1/2 sized up.

  3. What size should I go if regular? Not narrow nor wide? And these kicks are BEAUTIFUL! A must have in the collection.

    1. I did, and thin ones are okay, thick like elites were too snug. And they look funny weird on the top line around the ankle if you can see the socks.

  4. Those look like the Nike free run 3.0 that has been out for years…the NMD is tight but these are way over hyped by sneakerheads who ruined one of the best shoe of 2015 (adidas ultra boost) by taking off the reinforced sides…

  5. When you say these fit half size small, does that mean a 13 in these would be a 12.5 in OG ultra boost?

    1. My feeling is that caged UB is half size big. I’m 10.5 with boost crazy trainers but 10.5 UB is a lot of room in the front. I bought 10.5 uncaged so we’ll see how it goes
