adidas Signs Kristaps Porzingis, Should Nike Match?

According to The Vertical, adidas has signed Kristaps Prozingis to a multi-year deal that will pay the New York Knicks forward between $3 million and $6 million annually.

Kristaps has been wearing Nike, specifically Kobes, during his time in the NBA. The Swoosh has until mid-October to match the deal he signed with adidas, but should it?

Not only does Porzingis have star potential, but he’s playing in a large market. That, coupled with his media savvy demeanor, means he’s extremely marketable. However, with four signature models, and a fifth possibly going to Paul George, would Nike really pay Porzingis that much money to push other signature/team models? Probably not.

What do you guys think? Should Nike match the deal Porzingis has signed with adidas? Should adidas give him a signature model?

  1. Im guessing Nike won’t match that offer, they already have too many players,

Very Happy for Porzingis, turning those draft day Boos to CHEERS,

Most likely he will get his own Crazy Explosive player exclusive colorway.

  2. F**k nike, they disrespected the porzingod. They wouldnt give him pe’s for his kobes so he had to color them with sharpie. I would have signed with adidas too

  3. Nike is so stupid. Porzingis is player that even if isn’t a superstar and is only a solid player, will still have a cult following in NYC and is someone that people globally will love. He so marketable, and once again Nike loses another young star to Adidas

  4. Adidas certainly needs him more than Nike. Anyone at Nike is playing 4th fiddle at the absolute best with Lebron, KD, and Kobe. For Adidas, Derrick Rose isn’t marketable any more…all the injuries, steep decline, and now an ugly legal case swiriling around out there. They could use a guy like Porzingis who is a fan favorite with superstar potential playing in NY.

  5. They probably won’t ever give him a sig because, you know, big man, but I kind of want to see him with adidas just to even out the player count a bit more with Nike. Interesting that shoe companies have a match contract thing, like the actual basketball contracts.

  6. Why does Nike always have the rights to match other brands’ offers? I saw that they did that with KD too. They matched UAs offer and I think added a bit more on top.

Is that a standard clause they have in all their contracts? What happens if the player wanted to leave the brand?
