Last week, WearTesters reported that October would see the release of the Kobe 1 Protro in Black/White-Varsity Purple’. Now, we’ve got official images of what might be one of the cleanest releases of 2018.
If you’ve been following WearTesters in 2018 you already know that the Kobe 1 Protro is a contender for best basketball shoe of the year. Now, the updated classic is about to release in a subtle Lakers colorway that shows off all the leather on this shoe.
To create this revised performance retro, Kobe Bryant worked with Nike Basketball footwear product director Tony Grosso and his team for over three years rebuilding the original Zoom Kobe 1. By eliminating pieces of the original shoe that were no longer needed, the team was able to improve the shoe’s cushioning.
The cushioning now used is a full-length Zoom Air unit (only 6.77mm thick) with a thick insole that features crash pads at the heel and forefoot. Additionally, the team was able to improve the ride in the Zoom Kobe 1 Protro by eliminating foam and decreasing the size of the carbon fiber shank.
The Kobe 1 Protro ‘Black/White-Varsity Purple will release for $175 at Foot Locker on October 23 to coincide with the release of Kobe Bryant’s first book, The Mamba Mentality: How I Play.
