First Impression: Nike Air Foamposite One

What came after the Penny 2? If you thought it was the Air Penny III then you missed a model. While the Foamposite One isn’t technically part of Penny’s signature series (considering the 1-4 numbering), having the 1 cent logo featured throughout the silhouette… it’s hard to argue this is anything but Penny’s shoe.

Traction – Full length herringbone is great… but that’s also surrounded by translucent rubber.

These should start out pretty strong but then the translucent sections will eventually succumb to dust & debris. It’s sticky now but that will only work in its favor as long as the court is in pristine condition… which is highly unlikely.

Cushion – Full length Zoom… I’m fist pumping right now. You have to wear full length Zoom in a bit, similar to breaking in a midsole.

The midsole itself is features a double last build (internal) so that in itself will require some heavy duty break –in time. They won’t feel great at the beginning but over time they should be very cushioned and responsive.

Material – It’s all in the name… Foamposite was – might still be – ahead of its time. Starting off as a liquid then injected into a mold upside down until a Polyurethane shell is created. With heat and moisture the PU will begin to break down a bit and the molding process will begin. Not only will you receive a custom fit, you will also have one of the most durable sneakers known to man.

Fit – They fit snug at first but they are true to size. The only thing I can complain about right now is that I can’t seem to get my heel to lock down in the shoe when laced so hopefully that won’t be a continuous issue.

Ventilation – Air flow is minimal and you can judge harshly because of it… this is what is needed for the material to mold to your foot shape. I can already tell you that their overall score will be brought down due to the lack of ventilation (even though needed) which is exactly why you need to look at the score cards in the categories that YOU NEED and not the overall total. Overall scores are usually deceiving when you may not need everything the shoe provides. Use your head when looking at scores and don’t look for the quick “they only got a 5?” type of thing.

Support – I can’t say support is lacking in Foams… between the hard shell upper and Carbon Fiber shank, you may have some of the most supportive pieces in place when compared to other sneakers. On the flip side… you most likely have the makings for one of the most restrictive sneakers as well so it’s a give or take thing. Either way, the material and Carbon Fiber will offer you tons of support that may be unmatched by any other shoe ever released.

Overall these look like they could be great for some and horrible for others. Being small, I can’t say I’m too excited. They’re going to require a ton of break-in time which will prolong the review but I can’t really do much about that.

I call these the Batsuit of kicks… sturdy and restrictive yet very protective.

  1. Hey, could you please say the weight of the shoes you are testing? I love light weight shoes but have most of the time no idea how heavy they actually are. I love buying shoes over the internet and that is why i would love if you would say the weight of the shoes in your next reviews 🙂

  2. Hey night, this is only slightly relevant to this but I was wondering if you would ever consider playing some sb dunks? You seem to be open to the idea of playing in all these 80s and 90s shoes so why not something that’s a little out there?

All the new sb dunks have phylon midsoles, heel zoom, forefoot poron foam and an updated traction pattern that’s similar to the original one found on dunks, big nikes and aj 1.

Just putting the idea out there in case you ever run out of shoes to review. Makes sense considering dunks were originally a ball shoe.

      1. Fair enough. If you own or plan on getting a pair of sb dunks, you can take out the insole and use it for more cushioning. The zoom unit and foam are constructed into the insole. Just a heads up.

        1. I have a pair, they are a little more narrow than my hoop shoe insoles so I usually use the Jordan 2009 insole if I need more cushion. It would be nice to have the foam toe though.

  3. I can never get my pair to lock down my heel while playing bball either. Well, that’s not true, I can get them to lock down my heel if I lace them tight enough to cut off circulation to my toes. Not sustainable but it works.

I didn’t have problems breaking them in as they were fairly comfortable from the get go and only got more comfortable over time. Of course, they are my grails so I could be biased…

    1. They are comfortable but I dont know how well I will be able to bend them with my size and weight. Its something that I dont usually care about for casual use but performance wise always ends up being a bummer.

  4. Looks like a beast on-court, sadly not a foam fan 🙁 Today I saw the UNC colorway Air Jordan 2012 System of Flight for only $150 at the Nike Factory Store. I tried them on and they felt amazing, possibly better than my all-time favorite, ZK6. Hopefully they do another price drop, but I can NOT wait to play in those haha 🙂 Also great pre-review man, always look up to you and your reviews whenever I go pick up some shoes. I wouldn’t even have given a chance to those AJ2012s if it wasn’t for you.

  5. Not a fan of foams because i don’t like long break-in times. But still looking forward to the performance teasers & full review on this. Keep up the great work!

  6. nightwing2303, does the fly wade 2 (not ev), fit wider after playing in them for a period of time? will u be doing a performance review on the jordan superfly

  7. curious to see your thoughts of FoamM pros traction vs the penny. I balled in the pearls for a few months when they dropped but felt them a bit too heavy after a few games so i would switch them out with huarache 2010’s. When Clips were in the playoffs battling Memphis and Nick Young was droppin 3’s rockin the liquid metal RED’s i busted the royals and had some good games in the post. Super comfortable shoe but has a time and place for sure.

  8. First of all I have been following you since the soldier 3 review. I am a huge fan and I highly respect what you do, I am only 13 right now but my passion is sneakers and performance sneakers. Thank you for doing what you do, and please.. Please never stop!
