Is This the Upcoming Nike Kobe A.D. ?

nike kobe a.d. 1

The Nike Kobe A.D. is the first Kobe model after the Mamba’s retirement, but not much is known about the shoe.

Today, some images leaked of what is being called the Nike Kobe A.D., and it isn’t quite what we were expecting. These look like wear-test samples, so the actual finished shoe could be completely different than what is seen here. On top of that, these look like the Mentality, which is a bit strange, as those are more of a budget model than an actual signature sneaker.

Maybe the Kobe A.D. is not a signature shoe, but rather another take-down line of shoes with Kobe’s name. It wouldn’t be too far fetched seeing as how LeBron just released the Zoom Witness, another new line within the LeBron series at Nike.

As far as tech, which could change by the time the shoe launches, this sneaker seems to feature a basic Fuse upper with Nike’s Torch tech for the tongue. Tooling looks to be of the drop-in variety, and traction is similar to what has been used on the Hyperlive and Hyperchase — both budget models from Nike. The lacing is the only real interesting feature; it looks like a ratchet lace system or possibly some sort of auto-lacing system.

Take a look at what’s being called the Nike Kobe A.D. below and share your thoughts on them with us in the comment section.

  1. Looks like a Mentality with a Hyperchase/Hyperlive outsole. It’s a shame because I love the traction on my Mentality’s.

  2. The lacing system looks like the BOA lacing system used on snowboard boots and biking shoes. Seems like there’s only one set so lock down may be an issue. Typically you will see 2 sets for better zonal tightening control. Interesting to finally see it on a basketball shoe.

    1. Yeah, depending if you’ve been into hiking and cycling, stuff isn’t particularly new. Wondering if this is actually under BOA or if Nike is gonna try to make out their own rendition. Usually when brands try to do it themselves I just hear of mech failures. In general it’s a great idea because it tightens more evenly and is easy to design around since the cables are so thin.

Fuse blocking (not the actual use of fuse) of the upper reminds me of the Kobe 4 otherwise.
