adidas Originals took to social media to announce a new partnership with grammy award wining artist and creator of the Billionaire Boys Club, Pharell Williams. This adds another collaboration to Pharrell’s impressive portfolio and keeps adidas on top of the sneaker world when it comes to designer collaborations.
Coming off tremendous success of his second studio album GIRL and hit singles such as “Get Lucky” and “Happy”, Pharrell looks to strike more gold with a new partnership with adidas Originals. Pharrell has had experience in the sneaker world with the Ice Cream skate team which had their own line of sneakers that were very popular with non skating skaters. They were packaged in an ice cream box replacing a traditional shoe box and featured some bright color ways. But expect more than that from this collaboration with adidas Originals as Pharrell has had ample success with his clothing line, Billionaire Boys Club.
Additionally, adidas has had successful collaborations with other high end fashion designers. The list of collaborators for adidas is quite impressive; Yohji Yammamoto of the Y-3 Collection has seen tremendous success overseas, especially in Japan, and the Jeremy Scott Collection has given the sneaker world never before seen silhouettes like the “Wings” model. The sneaker community is also on the edge of their seats to see what Kanye West and adidas have in store coming off the heels of the Nike Air Yeezy era. Even the recently discontinued adidas SLVR collection had some impressive designs and quality, the discontinuation of that collection was probably a move to have more financial flexibility to sign more high profile designers such as Kanye West and Pharrell. The only thing better for an artist than creative freedom is a bigger budget.
adidas is really expanding their range and reaching out to popular celebrities and designers to come to their brand. The Kanye West signing was huge for adidas, and having the potential to make a silhouette as popular as the Air Yeezy 2 is worth the risk. Adding Pharrell makes adidas even more diverse and look for some inspirational and creative designs from adidas Originals in the summer of 2014.
