The Nike Air Unlimited Retro ‘Slate’ Finally Reappears

At last, all fans of Chris Webber and Grant Hill can rejoice. The shoe worn in Webber’s Rookie year and Hill’s senior year has finally released in the best colorway: Slate/Black.

As soon as it was rumored that this shoe was going to retro this was the color every fan wanted, no, needed. The shoe itself is Flight-ish, meaning it was more finesse than Force, but in this colorway it became hard as rocks. If you read my 2016 year-end wrap up, you know this was picked as the Retro of the Year, simply because it was so ground-breaking at the time and we haven’t seen it in any form in over 20 years. The straps, like the Jordan VIII but better, the see-through Air window on the bottom (careful in the streets or you’re busted), the neoprene collar — this is ’90s of the highest order. Don’t believe us? Just look at that chunky midsole and Godzilla traction — that’s it.

We have seen the White/Aqua/Black in Foot Locker House of Hoops stores already, as well as the NikeLab creations, but this, well, this is magic.

The Nike Air Unlimited “Ultramarine” (official name but no one calls it that!) is available now at City Blue for $150 with free shipping over $50. We will let you know how they feel when ours comes in (I ordered them). It is, indeed, Christmas.

  1. I’d cop if the white/black pair came back. So far, outside of the OG colors, it looks like Nike is trying its hardest to ruin these classics.

    Performance review coming?

  2. I agree with R. Cole 718, Nike is doing everything in its powers to ruin a classic. I’m happy these came out for nostalgia purposes, but one of the best performance kicks Nike put out during the golden era is ruined with the tight jean and joggers colorways and the fact they ripped all of the tech out of the shoe. No forefoot air unit, they changed the heel unit to god knows what. The aesthetics are all there, but man, why murder the performance and still charge damn near the same retail price that they originally listed for. It’s like buying a Ferrari and putting a Corolla engine it and charging $250k for it.

        1. I didn’t think the Zoom 95 was bad. The 96 was a freak show – no zoom in the forefoot. The worst, though, is the vactech Air Force Max with the Walmart air bubbles.

          1. The 96 was an abomination of epic proportions. I still have my 95s from around 2008 and the cushioning is still old school 90s tech. The first set of retros for the 96 back in 2007-2009 range had full length zoom like the OGs, but this bargain bin corner cutting stuff Nike is doing now is dumb. Especially for the premium price they are asking. I thought I was disappointed when Adidas went away from Adiprene+ on the Crazy 1 and replaced it with a reengineered version of EVA, but it still worked. Stripping air units from performance beasts just to make them a lifestyle model is just wrong.

    1. Especially when it isn’t going to sell well – no one except diehard Nike heads from the 90’s will look for it, especially at $150. Give us the true tech and at least are the few who order or purchase at release time a treat. However, I did order pair today.

  3. I copped the admiral color that og one David Robinson wore, I took them to the court for about 3hrs. I had a littl pinching from that little rubber part behind the pull tab but it goes away quick. Lockdown is amazing, traction is surprisingly really good, and what shocked me was the cushion! I’m assuming they have forefoot zoom or something because I can feel the responsiveness there. These babies can still go, also I played at a 24hr court.

        1. Thx your support Nightwing !

Due to the midsole of air unlimited as same as air prevail and it’s good hoops outdoor shoes in 1993(in my memory), nevertheless air jordan viii & ix 1993~4 amazing cushion those all features huge air sole unit in heel and encapsulated a white rubber material surround with air sole. Non-environmental material created good shoes once upon that time…

          1. Those were the days when you’d wear an outsole out on a shoe and the upper would still be halfway good. Nowadays you’ll destroy and upper and have a full outsole remaining. The Air Prevail was super dope. A streamlined version of the Unlimited. I remember the Phoenix colorway that Thunder Dan rocked. I believe Penny even wore it briefly as well in a blk/wht colorway.

  4. The cushion is good in my opinion, I felt the air units while landing from draining all my treys lol so if anyone gets them, take them to the court.
