The “Flipping the Game” Podcast Gives Voice to Women in Sneakers and Streetwear, Hosted by Scottie Beam

Reebok has partnered with Gimlet Media to create the first-ever podcast series that will explore feminine influence in the sneaker industry: Flipping the Game.

According to Reebok, the new podcast is inspired by the brand’s role in establishing the original precedent for female fitness footwear. In 1982, the brand introduced the Freestyle Hi, the first athletic shoe made exclusively for women. Flipping the Game will continue what Reebok started in the ’80s by discussing sneakers, fitness, and streetwear, and passing the mic to feminine voices working in these industries to speak on the battle for equality in the space.

Hosted by New York radio personality Scottie Beam, who got her start on HOT 97, the show will invite guests like Sophia Chang, a “music business matriarch” who has managed members of the Wu-Tang Clan and made her way into the world of fashion; Jazerai-Allen Lord, the woman behind the #ChicksonFire movement (better known as @nerdlikejazzy in the sneaker community); April Walker, founder of Walker Wear and author of Get Your A$% off the Couch; Emily Oberg, an influencer and sneakerhead that left KITH to focus on her own brand Sporty & Rich; and fitness guru Denise Austin. Original sounds will be produed by DJ TRAKGIRL.

“This is what it’s all about. Gone should be the days of ‘now available in womens sizes’. Women love sneakers, and sneakers are for women just as much as men, simple as that,” said Scottie Beam in a statement. “Our goal is to honestly just remind everyone of this — and flex on the patriarchy while we’re at it.”

Gimlet Media is an award-winning production company responsible for podcast series like Mogul (hosted by Reggie Ossé), Science Vs, and Uncivil (which won a Peabody Award in 2017). The company has prided itself on bringing powerful thought-provoking commentary to the podcast space through compelling and underrepresented voices.
