Former NBA MVP Derrick Rose has been under contract with adidas since the 2012-2013 season. Despite the injuries that ultimately derailed his career trajectory, adidas is still paying him handsomely and continuing his signature shoe line.

According to a 40 page contract obtained by Jon Werthheim of Sports Illustrated, Rose’s contract with adidas called for annual retainers of $12 million per season from 2012–13 until ’16–17; the contract also included annual royalties of up to $6.25 million, while annual appearance fees to adidas events can earn him up to $4.8 million per year; on top of all that, Rose has the luxury of using a private plane.

Furthermore, Rose’s brother Reggie is also entitled to between $250,000 and $300,000 annually as a consultant, while his childhood best friend/assistant Randall Hampton is paid between $50,000 and $75,000 annually for consulting services. adidas has also promised to contribute $150,000 annually to the AAU team of Rose’s choice.

Although the contract has reduction clauses like most, according to Sports Illustrated, Rose’s appearances to various promotional events nullifies his failure to make the All-Star team and missing half of the season, as required by the contract.

Even more surprising is that adidas decided not to invoke the moral clause to get out of the Rose-Hampton rape accusations, which showed enormous faith in Rose’s innocence. Ultimately, Rose was not charged criminally.

The case of Derrick Rose is an interesting one because sneaker companies usually don’t show this much faith in one athlete — especially when the athlete has fallen from stardom and into mediocrity. With Rose opting not to retire this season, adidas is obligated to pay Rose until 2025 due to their 13-year contract signed in 2012.
