Why the Big Baller Brand LaMelo 1 Looks Just Like the Brandblack Rare Metal

Earlier today, SLAM and the Big Baller Brand officially unveiled the upcoming LM1 (LaMelo Ball 1). The Internets went nuts because it seemed like BBB had ripped off yet another sneaker brand’s looks. However, that isn’t the case at all.

A very reliable source close to the brand, who spoke with us on the condition of anonymity, stated that Brandblack’s David Raysse and Billy Dill have created a separate design consultancy that is currently working with the Big Baller Brand.

Not only are they helping BBB develop their upcoming sneakers from a design perspective, but they’re also assisting BBB in creating new technology and materials that are said to differentiate the BBB products from what Brandblack produces.

Not much more information can be divulged at the moment, but once we’re allowed to release full information then we’ll do so. In the meantime, you can expect the Big Baller Brand sneaker to officially become available this holiday season for a retail price of $385. Pre-orders are currently being taken exclusively at BigBallerBrand.com.

  1. Nightwing knows all. Omniscient one. But I know one thing for sure and it is that $385 is too high for me.

  2. I mean I still don’t understand why it looks damn near the same other then the heel and medial portion of the upper. Its like Sketchers making a copy of a shoe but saying it has different tech ? I know y’all remember them fake yeezy 350s that people made fun of.

  3. Like how they call out “fly knit” in the shoe description. Like a space in the word is different tech…. I bet lawyers are getting ready. A sketchers business model for sure.

  4. Interesting. Thanks for shedding some light on that. I know that I saw the similarity immediately and started to wonder how BB would feel about that. Even that is too close…BB & BBB. LOL!

  5. Makes sense now, but I think greater strides could have been made to differentiate the products. Brandblack had to know fans of the brand were going to be all over the fact the shoes were so similar and you would think BBB would know charging $400 for a bust down of a $110 shoe was going to alienate consumers.

Oh well…it’ll be interesting to see how this plays out.

  6. Thanks Nightwing for enlightening us. My first reaction was “damn BBB really has no shame, those look EXACTLY like rare metals!”, now I understand why.

TBH though, lamelo ain’t worth the USD250+ premium man… why would I get his shoes when I can get Brandblack’s product for 250+ less. Just LOL

    1. This consulting gig will be great for Brandblack’s exposure though. They have been putting out quality products and I would really like to see them being recognized more! Really loved all the shoes I’ve bought so far… JC2s, Rare Metals.. Now if they could somehow get a great traction pattern design and compound like the kobe 9s… then they are golden (rare metals are almost PERFECT for me except the traction… if they had kobe 9 traction I would stock up on them)

  7. BBB easily made the pot stir to start with this announcement
But the fact they’re taking a stride in more serious development is a great move by them.

I’m sure some people are going to hate BB (BrandBlack) for this, but both brands seized an opportunity. If memory serves right, BB didn’t want to get into ridiculous mainstream levels of production volumes, but I’m sure they were open in building up the brand name in some respect. BBB is trying to hurtle itself into premium pricing and is commanding popularity. They just needed something more legitimate in their design department, and last I checked both brands are based in SoCal.

    1. Why wouldn’t Brandblack want to get into bigger production volume? Wouldn’t that mean more money and exposure for them to make and sell more shoes?

  8. Brand Black is funding by Skechers if you all didn’t know. We all know Skechers knock offs. Looks like they are getting into the $400 knock off game and signing up the BBB. Comedy.

  10. I feel like there is a difference between “consulting” and just using what you have already made and putting it on another shoe in a slightly different way. I think it is all fine if they want to consult on new styles or tech, but making it so similar feels kinda lame to me. I also do wonder what “tech” is so good that is gets anywhere close to justifying a $250 price jump. I also have questions about how BB and BBB are somehow able to get better tech than the big 3

  11. This is weird. I want Brandblack to get bigger, but this model looks like a cheap knockoff of theirs, but then the price tag is way higher?

WTF. I don’t get why it’s so much more expensive. What tech could they have to justify that type of price increase over the original version?

    1. It’s not Brand Black doing that ICE. It’s that family. They are purposely overpricing their product. They did it with the older son too before he was even wearing his model on court. I have no true understanding of why other than to create a stir which they have done a great job of doing over here in the States…not in a very positive way though.

  12. I think this is a BBB shoes made by brandblack sortha thing. The same arrangement BBB is asking for the top 3 brands which got denied. Anyhow, fantastic marketing, the news got viral and benefitted both brands with exposure

  13. If I can get brand black for under 150… why would I go with something that’s nearly identical but twice the price? This benefits neither company.

  14. In all reality, I think that there should have been much greater differentiation between the looks of the shoes. There shouldn’t have been such a resemblance in the design cues. Then again, this is probably exactly what BBB wants but I’m not 100% sure of the positive from a Brand Black stand point unless…

BB’s designer/ceo wants to produce a product that they know will look similar but be priced much higher to drive attention to their product which is comparable and much less thus driving up their revenue when people hear the buzz and take a look.

BBB just likes to do things that will cause attention and 100% knew that the similarities would cause a stir which seems to be the main goal anyway for them in most aspects.

    1. I think the opposite. This is exactly what Brand Black wants. LaMelo Ball is 100x more popular and well known than Brand Black. The fact that anyone will mention that they look like Brand Black only brings more attention to the brand.

      1. Yep. Pretty much. That’s kind of where I was going with my second paragraph. The resemblance was on purpose to get that comparison going on the web especially knowing that BBB would make the price ridiculous which would make the BB look more attractive to consumers.

  15. So basically Brand Black probably consulted this design knowing it would bring more attention to their brand? Seems like a pretty smart move on their part.

  16. a quick google of Brandblack LLC says it’s a subsidiary of Skeechers….if that’s true, i can’t believe Skechers, a publicly traded company, would allow the founder & creative director of Brandblack to consult for another shoe company…could BBB be in line to become another subsidiary of Skechers???

    1. Pretty sure Brandback came on board months after the ZO2 was designed.

But speaking of which, another way we can see BB seizing an opportunity they pretty much have Lonzo (at least) as their potential signature player. It won’t be as direct as the typical relationship, but people will put 2 and 2 together.

But eh, a lot of my excitement is coming from being a Laker fan. It’d just be awesome to see a brand I like rise with the team and player I like. To know that Lonzo’s next shoe could be designed by BBB is just….yay.
