On Wednesday, Under Armour unveiled Dwayne Johnson’s ‘All Day Hustle’ collection that includes HeatGear apparel for training and two new builds of the Project Rock 1, the Johnson’s signature training sneaker. However, we wanted to take you behind the design of this sneaker.
To get deep into the design of Under Armour’s trainer for perhaps the world’s busiest and most hustling athlete, the brand spoke with Lauren Jones, Senior Product Line Manager of Training Footwear at Under Armour.
“Dwayne was involved in the creation of this shoe from start to finish — wear testing each and every model until we created one that worked perfectly for his training needs,” said Jones in a statement. The shoe is designed for people that have the will to hustle, like the Rock.
“He wholeheartedly wanted the Project Rock 1 to be the most innovative, durable and supportive training shoe on the market so that his fans would never have to think twice when it comes to choosing a training shoe that can keep up in the gym,” concluded Jones in a statement.
Built to keep up with a man that averages three blockbuster movies a year, inspires millions of athletes daily on social media, stars in his own hit TV show, and never misses a workout, the Project Rock 1 features a knit upper that delivers a sock-like feel. The intricately designed webbing gives the shoe the ideal degree of flexibility for lunges, box jumps, and push-ups, according to Under Armour.
The Project Rock 1 is cushioned with UA’s lightweight Micro G technology because, according to the brand, Johnson is just as serious about his cardio as he is about pushing weight. To keep the Rock’s foot on the shoe’s footbed while he does 300 lb. squats, Jones gave the shoe a TPU heel puck and a wide, flat toebox; both should work in tandem to improve stability and enhance toe-gripping.
Finally, designer Lauren Jones constructed the Project Rock 1 with double stitching for extra durability. A zig-zag stitch line runs from the heel tab all the way down to the knobbed outsole to reinforce the knit build and increase abrasion resistance.
