New Line of UA Record Equipped Runners: the Gemini 3, Velociti, and Europa

Under Armour record equipped line up

Today, Under Armour has announced its brand new line up of running shoes that feature fitness tracking built right in. The latest UA Record Equipped runners include the UA SpeedForm Gemini 3 RE, UA SpeedForm Velociti RE, and UA SpeedForm Europa RE. I showed you all three sneakers when I attended the Under Armour SS17 showcase back in late October (click here to jog your memory).

The new sneakers are powered exclusively by MapMyRun, one of UA’s mobile apps that houses a global digital running community. According to Under Armour, each Record Equipped shoe includes new features that will give runners insights into their muscular fatigue prior to working out. MapMyRun achieves this by using the Jump Test, which scientifically measures the average air time of a sequence of jumps as an indicator of muscle fatigue. This should help track an athlete’s recovery status over time and offer insights into how to alter workout intensity. The smart shoes will also provide detailed workout stats, such as cadence, and real-time pace information without ever needing a recharge.

The new Record Equipped line up follows Under Armour’s Run Long and Run Fast categories.

The UA SpeedForm Europa RE, also priced at $160, is a Run Long sneaker with a focus on stability; it is lightweight, features a mesh tongue and toebox for increased ventilation, and includes blown rubber under the heel to help absorb impact. (This seems like the shoe for heel strikers.)

Finally, the UA SpeedForm Velociti RE ($140) is a neutral Run Fast sneaker that weighs in at just 7 oz. The Velociti utilizes an embedded sockliner, SpeedForm construction, and Charged cushioning.

If you recall, Under Armour’s first smart shoe was the SpeedForm Gemini 2 RE. Shortly thereafter the brand doubled down on wearables by partnering with HTC and JBL to create the $400 HealthBox; it included an activity-tracking wristband, a scale that wirelessly sends data to the UA Record App, and a heart rate monitoring chest strap.

Footwear has been a growing force for Under Armour and, according to the brand, it plans on doubling the number of units of Connected Footwear worldwide in 2017 with global distribution to North America, Europe, the Middle East, Australia, New Zeland, Japan, and for the first time, Greater China.

“This latest release of Connected Footwear technology is the manifestation of Under Armour’s deep knowledge of elite athlete training, our industry-leading digital expertise, and our relentless pursuit of innovation,” said Kevin Haley, President, Category Management and Innovation at Under Armour. “The technology empowers athletes everywhere, at every level, with performance advantages previously available only to the world’s most elite athletes. Following the success of our first smart shoe in 2016, we are very excited for this global rollout of cutting-edge footwear in 2017.”

The latest UA Record Equipped footwear line, and more upcoming products, will be on display at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas at the Under Armour booth (#43912). All three sneakers above will be available for pre-order on UA.com beginning January 5 and will include an annual MVP subscription to MapMyRun with access to training plans, audio coaching, live tracking, analytics, and multi-language VIP support.
