First Impression: Nike Air Flight One (1) Retro

I love the 90’s!

Traction – Solid rubber, herringbone and flex grooves… what more could you want? The rubber isn’t extremely pliable – it’s sort of on the stiff side – so that may affect the traction a bit but who knows. Visually, they look like they will be fine.

Cushion – A forefoot Zoom Air unit is in place. It’s not noticeable when you just put them on and I blame that on the thicker insole. I didn’t even know these had Zoom Air until I pulled the insole out so once the insole breaks down a bit then the Zoom should be more noticeable.

What you can feel is the heel Air unit. I don’t have much to say about it really… it’s an Air unit… in the heel… nothing new here.

Lightweight Phylon is the last component to their cushion. All in all… these should be extremely comfortable.

Material – If you watched the quick look video I had done on these then you already know what’s up with the materials. Basically it’s all cheap synthetics. Not premium synthetics like the Rose 3… cheap synthetics. I hate to bring stuff like this up from time to time but Nike really does ask for it – and we don’t help the situation by purchasing every pair – but the originals had full grain leathers and nubucks & retailed at $109.99… these feature cheap synthetics and retail at $119.99… just throwing it out there…

I wonder why I didn’t get any hate comments regarding my bashing Nike for doing something stupid but I received plenty of hate comments for saying Under Armour’s Micro G Charge BB was a pathetic gimmick that didn’t work?

Fit – They fit true to size with a bit of wiggle room in the toe width wise. If I went down ½ size it would have helped but then my toes would run right into that rubber toe cap… I decided to just deal with the dead space. Once fully laced they do feel secure… only question is if the material can handle on-court action.

Ventilation – There really isn’t any. The tongue is the only thing that’s breathable and even then… it isn’t much. However, it’s a 90’s shoe… we could have cared less about ventilation back then.

Support – TPU shank, extended Phylon midfoot section and an internal heel counter – most likely made of cardboard – are all in place. It’s pretty much all you need in my opinion.

This one is really up in the air. They could perform wonderfully or they could perform horribly. Will the material quality affect the performance at all and so on… this one should be interesting.

Just in case you are wondering, I have completed playing in the Air Penny IV Retro and the Air Penny V. I never did any write ups on those due to time constraints but I will post the performance reviews on both models along with the performance review for these all around the same time.

  1. Hey Nightwing-I’m not sure if it’s my computer or what-but it when I load your site, everything is sort of jumbled. I can still click the links to each of your posts, but all of the writing and pictures are mashed together. Hopefully it’s me and not you!

      1. Ive had this happen to me too. But it was only on my phone when i have it in portrait. When i turn it to landscape its all good. Love your reviews! Keep up the great work!

  2. It happens to mine too, but only briefly during the loading and takes about 10 seconds after fully loaded to set itself back to normal.
I think the issue is with the new slide show newsfeed thing you have, and im using google chrome is that helps.
PS. keep up the good work. your reviews are nothing but the truth unlike other shoe review sites that seem to sucker up to every shoe release.
You’re the only site i visit for my daily sneaker fix. dont ever change!!

    1. Thank you, I wont change.

It may be the connection speed, computer or device. It only takes a second to load properly on my laptop, desktop and iPhone. I use Chrome and Explorer and both are fine… same with 3G. I will continue to look into it though.

      Thanks!

      1. Same thing happens briefly on my MacBook Air using the Safari browser. It fixes itself after a few seconds though. Most times, it just takes 5-10 seconds and everything realigns.

        1. same goes to mine, but when it loads finish, everything gets to normal, and i have another issue, after finish loading, when i click any post, the 1st pic of the post is always not in the middle, i can only see half of it, i have to click it to see the full pic

  3. i use google chrome and it jus takes about 5-10 seconds…if you use google chrome and u have good connection jus wait alil it will fix up by itself but it could be caz maybe you guys have a weaker connection….nightwing have you ever thought of making an app

  4. Hey,

I had the same issue. I think its the load speed, maybe distancefrom the server because im in Adelaide Australia. It fixes itself when the page completely loads. Looks asif the posts are on top if each other. Its fine after about 5 secs once it fully loads.

  5. Hey Nightwing, I had these back in the day. I’m pretty sure they had air units both at the forefoot and at heel (removing insole, forefoot cushion pod didn’t feel flat but you felt the typical air unit channels shape). I remember them for the extreme good cushioning, but fit was pretty bad because even pulling the laces strong it was hard to keep foot prefectly in place. I had the black version with nubuck upper. Really curious to hear how the retro will perform…

    1. The OG had zoom air at the forefoot. I have a catalog image from Eastbay with these in them and they had tensile air which is zoom air. Mine fit great after lacing them tightly. The softer nubuck may have been the problem.

  6. I tried these on. they were hard on my feet and never liked them.

as far as plenty of hate comments regarding the BB CRAP, really? well I guess they employed plenty of those shoe designers.

  7. Sorry about those hate comments you’re having dude. Seriously, the BB Charge sucks just by looking at the shoe itself and how you think it will perform! That’s why I did not ask question regarding that shoe cause I just don’t care about it! I’m looking forward to this but WHERE IS THE NEXT REVIEW FOR JORDAN XI:LOW RETRO? not that I’m rushing you or yelling….. just wanna know when. peace out 🙂

    1. I will be moving forward with the Jordan Project soon. There was a lot of kicks to review that were current models so those had priority. I may just be moving straight into the XII though… maybe we should have a vote bc people want the XII more than the XI low ie.
